Finding the perfect dress and shoes is a requirement for every girl going to their sorority formal. It is the time to get dressed up and enjoy a night out with sisters and dates. Each sorority has their own special formal or tradition that is unique to them.

This year, Phi Mu had their formal downtown at Browns Corner.

“One of Phi Mu’s favorite traditions is our annual pledge formal. Each year we hold this formal in Tuscaloosa honoring our new members,” Devin Grissom, the social chair for Phi Mu said.

The entire Phi Mu chapter wears black to this even except for the new members, who wear colorful dresses, according to Grissom.

“The new ‘Phi’s’ get to wear colorful dresses so that they stand out and feel special at their first formal event,” Grissom said.

Some sororities have two formals, such as Alpha Delta Chi.

Alpha Delta Chi has a black and white themed party and a semi-formal, according to the Vice President External Chair Angela Newman.

“The black and white theme party was at the loft and we had a DJ with over 90 guests attending,” Newman said.

The semi-formal takes place in November, is just for the sisters, and is held at the historic battle Friedman House, according to Newman.

“At the semi-formal we will be having an ornament swap and fun Christmas games,” Newman said.

Other sororities, such as Gamma Phi Beta, have their formal in Birmingham. Gamma Phi has had their formal at The Vulcan, which has a giant statue known to be the world’s largest cast iron statue.

“My favorite memory of formal was going in the elevator and standing at the top of the tower overlooking the city of Birmingham,” sophomore Ellie Wasser said.

Gamma Phi Beta took coach buses to Birmingham, which was a fun experience because everyone was so excited to get to The Vulcan and have a good time, according to Wasser.

Every sorority has their own special traditions that make formal night a night full of fun memories.

By Brittany Hickcox

As you stand in line to get into the bar your heart begins pounding in your chest. The nervousness builds as you make your way to the front of the line where the bouncer will ask you only one question; ID please?

Many college students under the legal age to drink turn to fake IDs as a way to buy the alcohol they see necessary to have a good time. Some people reason their purchase by saying it is easier to buy a fake than to ask someone older to buy their alcohol for them.

Mary Wilson, a cashier at one of the consignment stores on campus said, “I see kids try to buy beer the most with fake IDs.”

The problem with fake IDs is just that, they are fake. A picture may be blurred, the barcode may not scan, the lamination on the license could be missing, and some licenses have black light images where if a light is held up to it, one could tell it is missing the requirements.

According to www.miller-mccune.com, 18% of underage college students posses a fake identification

Many college students pay a lot of money to own a decent fake ID. Students, however, need to be wary, as there are scams across the Internet that falsify the clarity of the ID picture.

A person caught with a fake ID should also be cautious to use one as they can be charged with a Class B Felony Conviction. According to www.ago.state.al.us the sentence can range from two years to twenty years, this charge might be more lenient for a first offense.

“I look for the year, picture, and barcode on an ID. I can always tell by the expression of a person’s face on whether they are using a real or fake ID,” Wilson said.

According to an article on www.usatoday.com by Donna Leinwand, “Teenagers who want to skirt the legal drinking age of 21 now can visit Web sites that offer templates or “kits” to make authentic-looking IDs.”

Like anything illegal, serious consequences can occur for using an ID that is not authentically yours. Bar and store owners may confiscate a fake ID and display it in the store or bar, which could be humiliating for the owner of the I.D. In some states having a fake ID is a felony and could result in jail time, driving suspension, and having a criminal record.

Students who do decide to take the risk of owning a fake ID should weight both the pro’s and con’s to having one.

“Share the Pride, Celebrate the Tide” is the theme to celebrate Homecoming 2010.

Every Alabama fan has pride for the Crimson Tide and it shows with the traditions that the University has continued over the years, such as lawn decorations and the Homecoming bonfire. Homecoming week is a chance for alumni and students to come together and celebrate the spirit that we all have for Alabama.

This week is full of old and new traditions coming together. It gives alumni and current students a chance to celebrate together what the UA truly means to them. It also gives the Greek community a chance to form new ties with other houses that they did not previously know.

One of the oldest traditions is the Homecoming Parade. Every year people line the streets of University Boulevard to see the parade march from downtown Tuscaloosa through campus. Colorful floats built on eighteen wheel semis travel down the street. This event is fun for the entire Tuscaloosa community in that it celebrates what makes the University special. This year, former University of Alabama football player Tyrone Prothro will be the grand marshal for the parade.

Lauren Whitten, homecoming chair of a sorority on campus said, “My favorite part of homecoming is spending so much time with the other Greek organizations on campus at the events and at the house pomping.”

Another important sight to see is the lawn decorations placed outside of each sorority’s front lawn. Each year the tarps on the lawn decorations are dropped and then judged. It is a very exciting moment for every sorority to show all of the hard work they have put in for the past week.

“It is such an emotional moment for everyone to drop the tarp and finally see all your hard work and bruised fingers in what can only be described as magnificent artwork,” Whitten said.

This year the Crimson Tide will play Ole Miss for the big Homecoming game. To get everyone excited for the game there is a pep rally and bonfire. At the pep rally the Homecoming Queen will be announced as well.

Along with old traditions come new ones as well. Sororities compete in a talent show as well as a dance competition. Since these events have different people each year, they are always different and exciting to watch. These are both fun events to attend, and they really get the spirit up for Homecoming week.

The University of Alabama’s Homecoming committee puts forth a lot of effort to make the week one to remember. It truly will be filled with pride for the Crimson Tide.

By: Will Kirby

The Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, set to open in the spring of 2011 is located downtown, across the street from The Tuscaloosa News on the bank of the Black Warrior River. With a stage that is highly visible from even the “worst seat in the house” and a large area to the left of the stage that is dedicated to merchandise sales and catering services, you can expect this venue to be top notch. Holding close to seven and a half thousand people the venue has potential to bring in some big names to the area.

Tuscaloosa would be an easy tour stop for a band headed to New Orleans, Birmingham, or Orange Beach. In recent years The Wharf, a similar amphitheater (located in Orange Beach, Alabama) has managed to bring in artists such as Widespread Panic, Steve Miller, Steely Dan, and Bob Dylan, for the ladies John Mayer and Train. With a capacity of ten thousand, The Wharf has been Alabama’s premier amphitheater thus far. Other notable amphitheaters in the state include the Lake Martin Amphitheater in Alexander City and the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Birmingham.

So what can we expect from this venue in the spring of 2011? It wouldn’t be a stretch for Widespread Panic or a John Mayer type to stop at this brand new venue for a trail run. The Tuscaloosa Amphitheater is built to be a multi‐purpose venue which also opens possibilities for University related events. Capacity for 7,400 people means that Tuscaloosa has the potential to have a Greekfest repeat on any given Friday or Saturday night. For those of you who didn’t attend this year, Pretty Lights, Slightly Stupid and Bone Thugs‐n‐Harmony were the headlining acts. For those of you who did attend and still have your wristband on please take it off. I’m sure it will not be good next year. Look for this venue to add even more to the nonstop Tuscaloosa nightlife.
